Music and Rituals!

Hey ya'll, it's AC Garbade here again! Today I am going to talk about music and rituals and how they go hand in hand in todays world more than we think! My church back home is a baptist church and Christmas is very important in celebrating Christ's birth. We have a tradition/ritual of doing a candle light service shortly before Christmas and one song that has been played at this service for as long as I can remember is "Silent Night". This song is probably the first Christmas song I was introduced to as a child, i love this song very much and have an attachment in a way to it!

In Africa a ritual for weddings and cermeonys is playing songs of Praise. There are many music rituals in Africa, but i chose weddings and ceremonys to see the detail of these services. I chose Africa to learn more about their music and rituals as well as the country in general. This is because I have always wanted to do Mission work in Africa and this is a key thing to be knowledgable about to respect their rituals and culture overall. The video below shows a traditional Kenya wedding with rituals that are very important.

Hatian weddigns are sacred ceremonies held in private homes. Music plays a significant and vital role in Haitian weddings. The music types range from kampa to rara which are traiditonal music types in Haiti and are played at weddings a good bit. Fun fact is they cut the cake at the house where they also play the different types of music that is a ritual to Haitian weddings. I chose Haiti because I wanted to learn more and want to someday do mission work in Haiti. I used two resources for this information,n

My last music of choice is Scottish music and the rituals of music that are incorporate into Scottish weddings. I have been on three mission trips to Scotland, so I have heard some of the music and it is absolutely beautiful. Most of the music, including the ritual wedding music has some type of bag pipes in it, it absolutely beautiful in my opinion. The most common one is Highland Wedding, St. Kilda Wedding. I found a little bit of my information from https://www.scotlandsmusic.com/Explore/Weddings/Music#:~:text=Traditional%20tunes%20suitable%20may%20include,aisle%20with%20her%20new%20husband.

  5. Hey AC! Like you, my church holds a ceremony in December except mine is a traditional ceremony on December 12th to honor La Virgen Guadalupe. Your attachment to the song "Silent Night" because of its connection to the Christmas ceremony reminds me of the connection I feel with the mariachi that always plays during our ceremony at church.

  6. Hi AC, I liked the Haitian wedding music because it was so crazy with the drums and different instruments. It seems like the music really helped to heighten the mood of the event and people were obviously having a good time during the celebration.
