Big Blog 2: Scottish Music Aspects and History:

Image
Hey y’all, it's AC Garbade here again! I was thinking of different ways to go about this blog and I thought of different types of music, but I settled on Scottish music. I have been to Scotland three times and there is a lot of rich history and culture. Their staple instrument that they play in Scotland are the bagpipes. The bagpipes make beautiful music and can play various kinds of music as well. The bagpipes are woodwind instruments that use enclosed reeds fed from a constant reservoir of air in the form of a bag. The bagpipes are also in the Aerophone instrument family. I have seen the bag pipes played by one person as well as a symphony of people and it is absolutely breathe taking. Some fun facts about bagpipes are that they come in different shapes and sizes, there are many Scottish bands today who use bagpipes, and the great highland bagpipe is known as the 'piob mho' in gaelic. Here’s a picture of the bagpipes below, so ya'll can get a visual of this amazin...

Music and Family!

Hey ya'll! AC Garbade here again! So I decided to interview my mom for this music and family blog and l learned a lot of new things  about her style of music and how it has developed over the years, so let's dive into that now. I asked my mom what she listened to as a child and she told me that she listened to "New kids on the block". I researched them and two of the members of the band were Mark Wahlberg and Donnie Wahlberg which is super surprising and funny. I also asked my mom what she listened to in her late high school and into early college and she loved the old, classic country, specifically Patsy Cline and I absolutely love some of her songs. We both especially love the song "Crazy" by Patsy Cline. It is such a good piece of music, it is here below so that y'all can listen to this great piece of music. Patsy Cline's music career was sadly cut short when she died in a plane crash in 1963 in Tennessee. So she could have had many more years and...

American Roots of Gospel Music!

Image
Hey ya'll! It's AC here again! This is probably my favorite blog yet. I mainly listen to gospel/christian music, so discussing the history of this genre of music is going to be very interesting and fun for me! So let's dive into this now. Gospel emerged in America in the nineteen thirties , which was during the slavery era and American Protestantism.  It mainly emerged from three types of musical activities. The first one is the hymn style of Charles Albert Tindley, he was a Philadelphia minister who composed hymns based on negro spirituals, adding instrumentals. The second one is the minimalist, solo-sung "rural gospel" tunes that appeared as a counterpart to the rural blues, and the last, but not least the uninhibited, exuberant worship style of the Holiness-Pentecostal branch of the christian church. Here is a video clip of the Holiness-   Pentecostal  church music that will give you a taste of the basis of the start of gospel music. We see one of the first ...

Music and Gender!

Image
Hey ya'll! It's AC here again! Today I am going to talk about the specific attributes that play into music and gender, especially in specific cultures.  We have discussed many cultures in this class, so I am going to have a diversified blog where I touch on different attributes of cultures in my blog. I am going to start off discussing "Ho wy hey yo-six nations women." This is a piece in Native American culture that we discussed that the voices of the singers are all women. This one of the few that was all women's voices, so I wanted to touch on this one. The attributes that go into this piece are shuffle dance, shakers, drums, and a tremolo pattern. Usually in Native American music males and females have corresponding roles, but seeing this highlight of women's voices was beautiful to hear and see. We see deep culture in this music as well which is very interesting! I am also going to touch on the music of the Andes with gender roles. Men are mainly the instr...

Music and Rituals!

Image
Hey ya'll, it's AC Garbade here again! Today I am going to talk about music and rituals and how they go hand in hand in todays world more than we think! My church back home is a baptist church and Christmas is very important in celebrating Christ's birth. We have a tradition/ritual of doing a candle light service shortly before Christmas and one song that has been played at this service for as long as I can remember is "Silent Night". This song is probably the first Christmas song I was introduced to as a child, i love this song very much and have an attachment in a way to it! In Africa a ritual for weddings and cermeonys is playing songs of Praise. There are many music rituals in Africa, but i chose weddings and ceremonys to see the detail of these services. I chose Africa to learn more about their music and rituals as well as the country in general. This is because I have always wanted to do Mission work in Africa and this is a key thing to be knowledgable abou...

Hey ya'll! My name is AC Garbade! I am a junior here at Converse and I play on the volleyball team! I am a Special Education major and a FCA Leader here on campus! My family  is very important to me as well and they definitely shaped me into the person I am today! My church family and friends are very important to me as well! I interned with my church this summer and got to mentor elementary and middle school girls and it was one of the best experiences. Some of the girls are pictures below! 1. My current go to music on my playlist is "I've witnessed it" by Passion. This song is one I heard at my church here at Spartanburg and I absolutely fell in love with it! I have been playing it on repeat lately. It is definitely one of the best worship songs of this generation in my personal opinion. 2. A piece of ...
